Energy storage systems – could your business benefit?

Electrical energy storage could be the secret weapon in your battle to reduce your business’s energy costs. If you have solar panels or an electricity tariff that gives you periods of cheaper energy, a battery energy storage system could save you money.

How it works

Energy storage systems do pretty much what you might expect – store energy. This can be unused energy produced from solar panels, or electricity taken from the grid at a time when your energy costs are lower. The energy is stored in a battery for you to use later. Battery storage can be installed as part of new electrical works but also retrofitted to existing systems.

How could it help your business?

If you’re on a tariff which provides cheaper energy overnight (for example), there’s a chance you might not be able to make use of that. With battery storage, you can draw energy from the grid when your electricity is cheaper, and then use that energy during your core business hours. If you’re already set up with solar panels, energy storage systems help improve the efficiency of the panels by saving the energy for later, rather than it going back into the grid – meaning you get to keep more of what you generate.

How EML can help

Energy storage systems are not suitable for every type of building. The first stage in the process is getting an ‘energy map’ drawn up to check your building’s suitability. At EML, we can do that for you, using information from your energy supplier, or through data obtained from one of our energy monitoring kits. Once we know your building is suitable, we design the battery set up then carry out a fuss-free installation that minimises disruption to your business.

Battery storage systems either come with an app or are integrated into your Building Management System, giving you control over the settings. After installation we’ll talk you through everything you need to know, and we’re only at the end of the phone if you have any questions.
